Grooming is an essential part of being an Old English Sheepdog owner. Even if you decide that grooming will be done by professional groomers, you will still be involved with some level of daily grooming tasks. If you decide to wash your sheepie, you will have to chose products that fit your fluffy ball of fun. In this article we presented results of survey in which Old English Sheepdog owners recommended their favorite shampoos. However, most of them mentioned that they also combine their shampoos with conditioners as some of the recommended shampoos have great whitening effect, but dry out their coats.
To determine the best fitting and most appropriate conditioner for your Old English Sheepdog we have asked current OES owners to share with us their experience in using conditioners and which one they liked the most.

In order to get information on which are the most popular conditioners Old English Sheepdog owners use, we approached 27,841 members of various Old English Sheepdog clubs, forums and groups, and ask for their top picks. We received response from 9.14% of users, which is 2,541 members and we got the following results:

- 4.8% of OES owners recommend Mane ‘n Tail Conditioner.

The rest of the OES owners recommended other products, but the volume of recommendations was not significant enough to be included in the top recommended list. We have used the listed products on our dogs to find out what we liked about them and to confirm positives and negatives that Old English Sheepdog owners noticed.
What to Look For When Considering Conditioners for your Old English Sheepdog
As presented in this article, dog shampoos are excellent assistants when dealing with dirt, slime and stains, but some of them can cause dryness of the hair and some moisturizing and conditioning is required to sustain natural shine, glow and fluff. Some conditioners help to prevent mats. This is the reason why many Old English Sheepdog owners combine conditioners with shampoos.
As it is the case with shampoos, one of the most important consideration is to use appropriate product for your pup. Human graded products are strongly discouraged. As reported by The American Kennel Club, due to the difference in ph-factors foreman and dog products, it is advised that only dog conditioners are used, as this is the most effective way to avoid skin irritations and more adverse effects. Disrupting the acid mantle with human grade products can lead to parasites, viruses and bacteria vulnerability with side effects of skin dryness and flakiness. Therefore, stick to the dog-recommended products for you sheepie.
In line with this, it is necessary to state that not all Old English Sheepdogs will react the same way to a specific conditioner. That is why you can notice that there is always a small percentage of users that have different experience than the majority. There is no way to know, but to test the product on your pooch. Always consult veterinarian or canine dermatologist if your sheepie has known allergies to get their recommended products.
As important is to find a proper product, it is equally important to know traits of your breed. Washing Old English Sheepdogs too often can remove their natural oils and cause dryness, dandruff or other skin conditions. Therefore consult with a professional groomer and your vet to check what is the recommended frequency for your pooch. In addition, if you use shampoos that dry out coat, you will likely need to revitalize the hair with a conditioner.
74% of surveyed owners reported washing their Old English Sheepdogs once every two months on average. If your pooch likes to get dirty often, then once per month would be ok, but more frequent than that is discouraged.
Following the recommended regiment of brushing then bathing your sheepie is an optimal approach to coat conditioning. With an appropriate conditioner, your OES should get natural fluff and shine. The strong benefit of conditioning is that some conditioners have active formula to keep coat untangled and mat free.

Finally, you have to consider your sheepie’s age. If possible, try not to give full baths to puppies before their 8th week. This is to prevent hypothermia. You can use moist scent-free wipes, but most of the cleaning is done by their mum. After the 8th week you can give a bath to your little sheepies, but use gentle conditioners until their 6th month, after which they can use regular adult and slightly more aggressive conditioners. In any case, whenever in doubt, consult with your primary veterinary practitioner who will provide you with good options for your pooch.

T*H*E Stuff conditioner can be used as an detangler, so apply directly to any mats, work them free and then comb out. After removing mats, check if there was any dirt trapped. If yes, wash the dog once again. For long-haired breeds, it is recommended that coat is brushed and blow-dried until dry. Most of the surveyed owners just love T*H*E Stuff conditioner and would not consider any other product. Many owners reported loosening of mats and great detangling effect. It also prevents mats and repels dirt. Considering all this, it is easy to see why it is the favorite conditioner on the list.
The biggest complaint we and other users have is that T*H*E Stuff conditioner can make your floor potential slipping hazard. It creates very slick film and many owners reported that they almost had an injury, so they propose to either have a towel on the floor where you apply the conditioner, or you do the grooming outdoors. Another common complaint was that the bottle leaks and that the spraying mechanism is of poor design. This caused major frustration to long-term users. Sometimes diluted version of the conditioner is too watery, so OES owners recommend to buy concentrate version and to dilute on your own, as it is both cheaper and you are in control of the dilution process.
