One of the major factors when considering owning a dog is the initial cost of buying a puppy or a grown dog. However, the initial cost is just a part of expenses that you can expect throughout the life of your new family member. It is difficult to expect that this family member will contribute to the family budget (unless your OES becomes part of Dulux team, does commercials, or becomes a movie star), so you have to consider the commitment you are investing in the years to come. Some expenses you can avoid by making informed decisions. You could possibly adopt to save initial costs, you can select food and products with care, you can also ensure that you are getting healthy puppy and avoid many medical expenses, buy pet insurance, etc. Yes, selecting our new pet is an emotional decision, but as a responsible owner you have visited this article to get full information of the best and the worst-case scenario in order to be proactive and informed, which is commendable. Therefore, our aim is to provide you with reliable, researched, and accurate data about costs you could expect by owning an old English Sheepdog.
If you reside in the United States of America, an Old English Sheepdog puppy is likely to cost between USD 950 and USD 2,150 with the average price being USD 1,550. If you decide to groom, train, and walk your sheepie on your own, and if you feed your OES with dry food predominately, then yearly expenses are around USD 3,566 (or USD 297/month). Average lifetime (12 years) cost of owning an Old English Sheepdog is USD 42,786. Total cost of owning an Old English Sheepdog can rise to USD 147,878 (USD 12,323/year) if you feed your pup mostly with wet food, you hire a personal trainer, have a dog walker, and hire a groomer.
Some of the costs are fixed and you can’t do much to control them. However, there are many variable costs that add up to the fixed element. The biggest chunk of variable costs is going to be related to the health-related issues of you sheepie. Also, you will see if you will be willing to do all the grooming on your own, if you will have time and energy for all walkies with your pooch, or if you are risk-averse and you want to buy pet insurance and have ease of mind about medical bills. All these factors will influence total cost estimation, so we explore elements of pet budget and present it in several categories. In this article all costs are presented with a range of prices depending on the lower or higher end pricing of brands and products, and country of residence. It is not practical to present costs that depend on every country in the World, and even if we wanted to, information in certain countries is not easily attainable. Therefore, we present information for the USA, Canada, UK, European Economic Zone, India, and Australia. Readers from other regions will have to either draw conclusions from the presented data or do their own research in their respective countries.
Cost of buying or adopting an Old English Sheepdog

Buying an Old English Sheepdog
The first fixed cost that you are going to encounter is the cost of getting your new sheepie to your home. You can either chose to buy a puppy or to adopt a puppy. Sometimes you will be able to buy or adopt “grown-ups”, as owners experience many unplanned situations in their lives and have to pass their pets to other owners. Certainly, buying or adopting older dogs will be somewhat cheaper, but this also depends on the situation. If you are buying a champion that is sold due to some family emergency of the owner, you could still pay a premium. If you are adopting, usually there are fees associated with processing your adoption request, and you are not required to pay premium price. Some countries will have very structured process of purchasing and adopting, while others it will be quite simple without meticulous background checks and verifications.
If you reside in Canada, an Old English Sheepdog puppy is likely to cost between CAD 1,350 and CAD 2,250 with the average price being CAD 1,800. If you decide to groom, train, and walk your sheepie on your own, and if you feed your OES with dry food predominately, then yearly expenses are around CAD 3,518 (or CAD 293/month). Average lifetime (12 years) cost of owning an Old English Sheepdog is CAD 42,210. Total cost of owning an Old English Sheepdog can rise to CAD 181,082 (CAD 15,090/year) if you feed your pup mostly with wet food, you hire a personal trainer, have a dog walker, and hire a groomer.
The price you would pay for a puppy depends on many factors, but the most causative components are quality and background of puppy’s parents. If your puppy is not registered with national kennel clubs and does not have a pedigree, you can expect lower price. If the puppy is registered, you will have to pay more. If the litter that puppy belongs to has special certifications with full medical verifications, you will have to reach deeper in your pocket. Also, if your puppy has been already socialized to a certain level, breeders would ask for higher prices. Finally, if the puppy you are considering belong to a “champions” litter, where sir and/or dame are conformation champions confirming that they are almost as perfect as the standards set for the OES breed, you will have to pay significant price. Litter size, breeder’s location and reputation are some of the additional factors that could influence the price. It is necessary to mention that responsible breeder will invest significant funds to produce top-quality puppies. Therefore, the final price can come as a shock to you, but it does take a lot of investment to produce a top-quality litter.
As with other exclusive living or non-living belongings that are offered on markets, sometimes your money will not be enough, as the most exclusive puppies would be sold only to invited bidders. As disclosed in this article, choosing more expensive puppy can protect you from significant expenses in the future, as genetically tested healthy puppies come with low health risks, but at a premium price.
Table 1: Old English Sheepdog price range (scroll to right to see full data in the table)
The price range has been determined by researching recently available ads for puppy sales. You can expect some variation of prices depending on the market situation at the moment you are searching for your puppy, but these prices do provide a viable overview of price ranges. Top quality category is the highest price we were able to source, and it is advertised price for champion puppies with verified health status, pet insurance and health guarantee.
Adopting an Old English Sheepdog
While some countries have no fees to adopt a dog from a shelter, other countries will have fees associated with the process of adopting. The USA, Canada, Australia, UK and some EU countries have a very organized rescue services that have expenses which are not covered by the respective governments, so they have to charge a fee for adoption.
If you reside in the United Kingdom, an Old English Sheepdog puppy is likely to cost between GBP 950 and GBP 2,500 with the average price being GBP 1,725. If you decide to groom, train, and walk your sheepie on your own, and if you feed your OES with dry food predominately, then yearly expenses are around GBP 2,335 (or GBP 195/month). Average lifetime (12 years) cost of owning an Old English Sheepdog is GBP 28,014. Total cost of owning an Old English Sheepdog can rise to GBP 93,980 (GBP 7,757/year) if you feed your pup mostly with wet food, you hire a personal trainer, have a dog walker, and hire a groomer.
In the USA, there are many organizations that could assist you in adopting a dog. Specifically, if you are interested in Old English Sheepdogs, the safest way to find a shelter is to go through Old English Sheepdog Club of America. Over there you will find a list of shelter coordinators that you can contact directly, and they will help you to find you an OES ready for adoption. The process is rigorous, and you will have to satisfy many requirements before you can get your OES. Rules are not uniform, so you will have to check what are the requirements of each shelter. It is hard to find puppy for adoption, so it is probable that you would take adult OES with you. Adoption fees vary from USD 50 to USD 800. You can also try to check ads on AdoptPet, as there are some Old English Sheepdogs available in some states. You will have to browse state by state to find an Old English Sheepdog in a foster home.
In the UK, adopting fees could range from GBP 135 for adult dogs to GBP 250 for puppies under six months. These fees would cover all veterinary costs, microchipping, spaying or neutering, and similar. Some of the adopting agencies have some additional fees, like GBP 55 for dog training program, where the agency requires new owners to commit to 4-weeks training program before the adoption could be approved.
In Canada, adoption fees can range from CAD 300 to CAD 514 for adult dogs, depending on the necessity of transfers, while puppies could range up to CAD 644. These fees include pet registry fees, medical exams, spay/neuter surgeries, vaccinations, parasite treatments, microchips, 30 days pet insurance, as well as 1 bag of small, medium or large dog food.
Considering many different legislations and rules, it would be impractical to present data for all EEZ countries. We deliver range of fees for all European countries. Please note that in some countries there are no fees and everything is covered either by local governments, or by donations made to shelters. However, in some other countries you will have to pay for the handling and adopting fee. You should also be aware that some countries have strict rules about pet ownership, and you will be required to register and train your dog, as well as paying liability and health insurance. Even if you adopt, you will have to go through full verification of the dog breed and public risk assessment. If your dog is considered dangerous in that country, you will have to pass special training and pay higher dog ownership taxes and more expensive insurance. We did not find evidence that Old English Sheepdog is classified as dangerous breed in any of the EEZ country members. You could be, however, required to pass behavioral assessments with your dog to ensure that your dog is safe for public.
Australia is also well organized in their pet rescue network. Many organization members will have specific adoption fees that will depend on the amount of work done to prepare the dog for the adoption. Some dogs are found in rough conditions and require longer care. Fees are also going to be higher if the breed is smaller and/or popular. However, you can expect that some of the dogs are free for adoption, which depends on numerous factors, such are governmental subsidies, donations, big-brother programs, etc. Each region of Australia has somewhat different rules, but they are easy to understand and follow. The important information to keep in mind is that all dogs are fully vet-checked, vaccinated, microchipped, spayed or nurtured, and in general shape ready for adoption.
In India most commonly adoptions are free, but they would accept a small donation, so it is up to you if you would consider donating some funds to them. There are also many stray dogs, so you never know if you would run into a sheepie somewhere. However, please note that older and disregarded Old English Sheepdogs look somewhat different with their hair heavily matted, so you need to keep your eyes open. Organized shelters would help you with the adoption and stay in touch with you even after adoption.

This is where you can buy / adopt Old English Sheepdog puppy
As mentioned earlier, when buying a puppy, it is advisable to buy puppies from respected, certified, and acknowledged breeder. What you should experience in contact with breeders and adopting facilities is support and genuine willingness to answer all your questions. If you ever notice that there is any kind of block or opposition to your questions and if you feel that the answers you get are incomplete or too generic, you should think twice before committing. Established and experienced breeders are knowledgeable and will gladly answer all questions in relation to the breed and the litter from which you are considering your puppy. Responsible breeders will have energy and passion to educate you and will be glad if they can help you make an informed decision. They also are very interested in your background as they want the best for their sheepies and have to ensure they go to the best places possible. Adopting from shelters could be somewhat different and the knowledge of the breed is usually limited, but the wellbeing of the pup you would like to adopt is of the highest importance, so they will also go through essential information sharing with you. Considering that when buying an OES you commit to a significant investment, potential breeder should be able to:
- Welcome you to their kennel to see the accommodation and living standards
- Allow you to meet the parents of your potential puppy and allow you to spend some time with the litter if they are already healthy and immune enough
- Provide adequate accommodation space for the litter and other dogs in their kennel
- Give you full and detailed information about the Old English Sheepdog’s temperament, traits, and quirks
- Provide you with the complete overview of common health issues of sheepies
- Potty train and socialize their puppies as much as possible before they reach your home
- Ask you qualification questions about your home, environment in which the puppy would spend the most time in, and to analyze your readiness to be an OES parent
- Be willing to assist you with training, socialization, and nutrition of your new Old English Sheepdog puppy
As mentioned several times before, and in some of our other articles, you have a choice of buying a puppy from a breeder you trust. Correlation exists between responsible, experienced, and knowledgeable breeders and higher price of puppies. Therefore, ensure you do your research well and always buy puppies with health warranties.
If you reside in Europe, an Old English Sheepdog puppy is likely to cost between EUR 900 and EUR 1,400 with the average price being EUR 1,150. If you decide to groom, train, and walk your sheepie on your own, and if you feed your OES with dry food predominately, then yearly expenses are around EUR 2,400 (or EUR 200/month). Average lifetime (12 years) cost of owning an Old English Sheepdog is EUR 28,796. Total cost of owning an Old English Sheepdog can rise to EUR 106,861 (EUR 8,905/year) if you feed your pup mostly with wet food, you hire a personal trainer, have a dog walker, and hire a groomer.
Finding a puppy is not an easy task. It seems that whenever you decide that you would like a puppy, there are none available. At least not the one you had in mind. So, to find an Old English Sheepdog puppy, you will most likely need to get in contact with OES breeders and get on the waiting list. Usually, OES breeders have a plan of mating and could inform you when you could get a puppy if everything goes well. It is good to be on several lists, as if breeder expects eight puppies in a litter, but there are only 5; you might be the one not getting your puppy that time.
United States of America
Your safest choice of getting a good quality Old English Sheepdog puppy is through referral program of the Old English Sheepdog Club of America. However, not all breeders that are OESCA members actually participate in the referral program. So, even though you got an offer from some other breeder that is not in the list on the OESCA page, ask them if they are OESCA and AKC members and if they have signed OESCA Code of Ethics. We have written extensively in this article about AKC and their breeder of merit and breed by H.E.A.R.T. programs. So if you use AKC find a puppy market place, make sure you prioritize breeders with merit and H.E.A.R.T. badges, as they have taken a step further to ensure you are not taking health-related risks and that their puppies come with guarantees. These programs are demanding for breeders with many AKC inspections, so you can expect that these puppies are on the higher end of the price range for a sheepie. There are also other websites on which you could potentially find sheepies for sale, such are Adopt a Pet, Next Day Pets, or Puppy Find, where a lot of listing is crawled from all around the Web to offer you a selection, but you have to be careful and do your research to find healthy and AKC certified puppy.
If you are, however, more interested in adopting or rescuing an Old English Sheepdog in the USA, the best approach would again be through the Old English Sheepdog Club of America. They have a full list of OES rescue organizations, and there is a rescue coordinator who can guide you and find you the OES that is the best fit for you. Using OESCA coordinators is the easiest and most effective route, but you can also consult Pet Finder, or Adopt a Pet websites which have services to connect you with shelters and rescue organizations.
Canada
If you are in Canada and are looking to buy an Old English Sheepdog puppy, then the safest place to search for a CKC sponsored puppy would be through CKC Puppy List. Even though you will not see the list of puppies currently available, you will see the list of all CKC breeders close to you and you can contact them directly. Alternatively, you can utilize ad websites and find available puppies there, but you have to keep in mind that you have to do proper research of an advertised breeder before you commit. Some of the ad websites are Canada Pups, Get a Puppy, or Puppy Finder.
Shelters and rescue organizations in Canada are mostly focused on the region where they are located, so it can be sometimes difficult to find an adoptable Old English Sheepdog centrally. Of course, considering the popularity and rareness of bobtails, it will be difficult to find an OES for adoption anyways, but you can still try several websites that could help with adoption. Pet Finder is still a gold standard for adoption in North America, so this could be your first visit. You can also visit Canada’s guide to dogs website which has list of all rescue organizations for Canada. We have linked OES page, where you will notice that they propose browsing OESCA website, as they have Canada dedicated rescues information as well. There are many other regional rescues not concentrated on Old English Sheepdogs, but maybe they would have OES available at the time you are searching for one. Some of these websites and organizations are British Columbia SPCA, Dog tales, Rescue Shelter, or Adopt a Pet.
United Kingdom
On The Kennel Club’s webpage Find a Puppy, you will be able to find available puppies for sale. As described in this article, health screening is paramount to have worry-free experience with your future sheepie. Therefore, always do the research of advertised breeder before committing. There are other services that offer Old English Sheepdog puppies for sale, such are Pets 4 Homes, Free Ads, Puppy Choices, or you can browse the list of OES breeders and contact them to find out if they have or plan to have bobtail litters.
If you are interested in adopting or rescuing an Old English Sheepdog, your first visit could be The Kennel Club’s Find a Rescue webpage. However, there are also OES dedicated rescue organizations, such are OES rescue, or OES Rescue & Welfare Society, where you could apply to become a new owner of a sheepie. These organizations have only bobtails in their rescue, so it is worth a try to contact them for adoption. You can also use some other organizations such are Dog Trust, RSPCA, Batter Sea, Pro Dogs Direct, Petlist, etc.
Europe
Generally, it is difficult to find breeders for Old English Sheepdog in one central database for the whole Europe. You will probably need to research individual countries and get in contact with regional Clubs to get information about breeders. Considering that there are many laws in different jurisdictions, you can expect variety in quality of breeders and health screening they do. It is, therefore, paramount that you do your research. In this article, we describe common health issues and recommended screenings for OES parents and puppies. You should always verify that your puppy has all health checks done before you commit to a purchase deal. You can start by searching for Old English Sheepdog breeders in a country you live in by a simple google search and you will probably find contacts of breeders in your area. Alternatively, you could consult OES database website that allows breeders to advertise their litters from all of the EU. Similarly, OES Bobtail website allows breeders to advertise. Some other websites will have list of breeders and ads for puppies, such are Euro breeder, Euro Puppy, or individual breeder’s websites you can find through a simple google search.
As difficult it is to find an information about OES breeders in EU centrally, finding an OES for rescue is even more difficult. Each EU member has their own network of shelters and rescue organizations, so you will need to search for organizations locally in the country you are interested. Some organizations will have websites, while others will only use Facebook profiles or their volunteers to propagate information. National Kennel Clubs or OES Clubs usually have a list of contacts of shelters, which can be used as your start point. Some, but not full, information about shelters and available dogs is available on Every Dog Matters and CARO dog. You have to keep in mind that some Northern and Western Europe countries don’t have dogs for adoption due to population mindset about ownership and responsibility, or there are special governmental actions and programs. Therefore, if you live in any of these countries, you will probably have to adopt from Eastern or Southern Europe.
Australia
Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC) does not have a specific webpage to offer puppies, but it does offer a breeder validation service. You can use their website to enter information about a breeder you are interested in, and you will get the information of the breeder is registered with the ANKC. This, however, means that you will need to search for breeders and litters of Old English Sheepdogs on your own using some other websites. ANKC also reinstates what we have described in our detailed Old English Sheepdog health overview that you have to do all research on your own before making a commitment to purchase a sheepie from the breeder of your choice. There are several websites that have breeder information and puppies available, such are Pups 4 Sale, Dogz Online, Find Ads, Dogs Online, or Puppy Find.
If you reside in Australia, an Old English Sheepdog puppy is likely to cost between AUD 450 and AUD 2,200 with the average price being AUD 1,325. If you decide to groom, train, and walk your sheepie on your own, and if you feed your OES with dry food predominately, then yearly expenses are around AUD 5,604 (or AUD 467/month). Average lifetime (12 years) cost of owning an Old English Sheepdog is AUD 67,248. Total cost of owning an Old English Sheepdog can rise to AUD 221,963 (AUD 18,497/year) if you feed your pup mostly with wet food, you hire a personal trainer, have a dog walker, and hire a groomer.
Australia has one of the highest numbers of pet ownership in the World. However, there is also a significant number of pets that end up in shelters. It is estimated that over 45000 dogs are sent to shelters each year, out of which 20% are euthanized. There are many rescue and shelter organizations across the Australian continent, so you can utilize the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) website to find out about available pets for adoption. However, there are other websites that can provide information about adopting your Old English Sheepdog, such are Pet Rescue, Pet Barn, Dog Adoption Australia, Dog’s home, Rescue me, Paws, and others.
India
Unfortunately, website of Kennel Club of India is very basic and does not provide much information for interested users. There are no advertised puppies and there are no lists of accredited breeders, so you will have to spend some time searching for your Old English Sheepdog puppy. There are many websites that advertise sales, but you have to be very careful when screening available breeders. In this article we presented extensive information and provided advise on how to select a breeder and what to look for when choosing an OES puppy. List of breeders is not readily available, so you will need to use search engines to find Old English Sheepdog breeders in your area. Some of the websites that could provide information about available Old English Sheepdog puppies are Mr n Mrs Pets, Marshalls Pet Zone, Kennels India, and similar.
Adopting an OES in India could be quite difficult. There are many adopting organizations, but there are no OES focused rescues readily available for information. Your best bet will be to utilize web-search of local shelters and rescue organizations, or you can use Pedigree’s website that has a convenient search page. When you get in contact with them, they could potentially have some information about the adoption in your area, or somewhere else within the Country. It will not be easy to find a particular breed, especially Old English Sheepdog as it is not a common breed in India, but if you have enough patience, there is always a chance. You can also try Facebook groups and OES lovers to find information. You can also try following websites and organizations: People for animals India, Dogspot, Blue Cross of India, BSPCA, Frendi, Second Chance Adoption Centre, and similar.
Cost of feeding an Old English Sheepdog
Cost of feeding an OES depends on several factors, one of which is the dietary needs of your sheepie. You can choose to feed you Old English Sheepdog with dry food, wet food, or a combination of these. Some OES owners prefer to make their own home-made meals for their pooches, be it all meals, or only one meal, while other meals are dry/wet food combination. If you decide to make your own meals, the cost of feeding your OES will depend on the price of the ingredients you use. If you decide to feed your sheepie with dry and/or wet food, then below overview of prices could be helpful to determine yearly cost of feeding your Old English Sheepdog. You should also keep in mind that feeding a puppy, grown dog, pregnant/nursing dog, senior dog, or dog with special dietary needs (obese dogs, dogs with arthritis, etc.) vary in cost, where any time your food has special vitamins, natural or organic ingredients, or special dietary supplements, cost will be higher.
Costs and prices reported below are based on vetting available online pet stores in each of the countries (regions) included in the study, such are Amazon, PetCo, Chewy, ZooPlus, PetShop, PetSmart, and similar. Prices in Europe are average, as each country has its own tax system, so it is necessary to average prices for our cost estimation.
Cost of feeding an Old English Sheepdog puppy
Until they grow up and complete their development, you will have to feed your Old English Sheepdog puppy with puppy food to ensure your sheepie gets all necessary nutrients. Old English Sheepdogs are considered a large breed and OES puppies are mature when they are approximately 15 months old. Usually, you will get your puppy when he/she is 2 months old, so you will need to buy puppy food for approximately 13 months before switching to an adult version.

Each food manufacturer will apply label on their food on recommendations for your sheepie’s weight. The best approach is always to consult with your veterinarian in determining the appropriate amount of food for your puppy or adult dog and then divide that amount in three to four meals per day for puppies, or two meals for adults. Considering a growth chart for large dog breeds, Old English Sheepdog puppies will grow steadily until they reach their final weight of 60 – 100 lbs. / 27 – 45 kg, so you can expect that your OES puppy will consume approximately 377 lbs. (171 kg) of dry dog food in the first 13 months. This is calculated using growth charts and daily recommended amount of food for the weight in each month of growing. In our example we have used Acana feeding guide, as this is brand we use for our pup. If you are using other manufacturer, your quantity might be different, but in this guide an estimation of cost is in the focus. Considering the amount of dry dog food required for 13 months after you bring your puppy home, your puppy food cost can be in the range:
Table 3: Old English Sheepdog puppy dry food cost overview (scroll to right to see full data in the table)
The reason why you should consult with your veterinarian in regards of the number of calories that your puppy should take is because this is not easy to determine. The best indication for quantities is by monitoring weight and other clinical aspects of your sheepie. If your puppy is very active, developing body will require more nutrients and calories. Therefore, always consult your veterinarian.
Similarly, we have selected one brand of wet food and follow their feeding recommendation for puppies during their growth and determined that you would require 1,050 13.7 oz (390 g) cans of puppy wet food (assuming you feed your pup only with wet food) for the first 13 months from the time your Old English Sheepdog puppy arrives to your home.
Table 4: Old English Sheepdog puppy wet food cost overview (scroll to right to see full data in the table)
Clearly visible from the data presented in the above table is that feeding your dog wet food can be very pricey. As Old English Sheepdogs are large breed, it is evident that they will consume significantly more food than small breeds, even in the puppy stage. Now we will check how costly is feeding healthy adult Old English Sheepdogs.
If you reside in India, an Old English Sheepdog puppy is likely to cost between INR 50,000 and INR 85,000 with the average price being INR 67,500. If you decide to groom, train, and walk your sheepie on your own, and if you feed your OES with dry food predominately, then yearly expenses are around INR 119,193 (or INR 9,933/month). Average lifetime (12 years) cost of owning an Old English Sheepdog is INR 1,430,315. Total cost of owning an Old English Sheepdog can rise to INR 6,177,298 (INR 514,775/year) if you feed your pup mostly with wet food, you hire a personal trainer, have a dog walker, and hire a groomer.
Cost of feeding an Old English Sheepdog adult
Generally, dogs from 1 year of age to 7 years of age are considered adults. Therefore, we will track cost of feeding dry food and wet food for one year separately. We can then just add up years and get the total cost, which we will present at the end of this section.
As advised by the most dry-food manufacturers, you will feed 400 g or 0.88 lbs. of dry dog food to your Old English Sheepdog daily. If your sheepie is more active you can increase daily intake up to 1.1 lbs. or 480 g of dry food, or if your bobtail is more of a couch potato, you can reduce to 0.7 lbs. or 320 g per day. It is always advisable to discuss quantities with your veterinarian, as each dog is individual and your sheepie could require more or less than recommended by dry food manufacturers. In general, you will need 26.4 lbs or 12 kg of dry dog food per month, which comes to 316.8 lbs or 144 kg of dry food per year.
Table 5: Adult Old English Sheepdog dry food cost overview (scroll to right to see full data in the table)
As mentioned in the earlier section about puppy food, wet food is considerably more expensive if you decide to use only wet food. In practice, OES owners usually combine dry and wet food, and you will have to find the optimal balance of feeding variety and budget. Majority of wet food manufacturers recommend 5 13.7 oz (390 g) cans per day, which leads to 1,825 cans of food per year for your Old English Sheepdog adult. Of course, you have to keep an eye on your sheepie and adjust dosage if they are gaining weight.
Table 6: Adult Old English Sheepdog wet food cost overview (scroll to right to see full data in the table)
Cost of feeding an Old English Sheepdog senior
After 7 years of age, Old English Sheepdogs are considered seniors and might need some adjustments to their dietary plans. As mentioned earlier, your safest approach is to consult with your veterinarian who knows the history of your sheepie. As they age, dogs need some nutrients to help their bones and joints, so many manufacturers made special dry and wet food for seniors to keep them healthy. We assume that you will make a switch, but, of course, you can consult with your veterinarian if you will stick with the adult food and provide some supplements, if needed.
It is hard to predict life span of your OES, but on average they live 10-12 years. There are some sheepies that extend their life well over 15 years of age, but we will take 12 years as their lifespan. This is only relevant to add-up years on senior food after they transition from the adult variants.
As advised by the most dry-food manufacturers, you will feed 420 g or 0.93 lbs. of dry dog food to your senior Old English Sheepdog daily. If your sheepie is more active you can increase daily intake up to 1.12 lbs. or 510 g of dry food, or if your bobtail is more of a couch potato, you can reduce to 0.71 lbs. or 330 g per day. It is always advisable to discuss quantities with your veterinarian, as each dog is individual and your senior sheepie could require more or less than recommended by dry food manufacturers. In general, you will need 27.9 lbs. or 12.7 kg of senior dry dog food per month, which comes to 339.5 lbs. or 153.3 kg of senior dry food per year.
Table 7: Senior Old English Sheepdog dry food cost overview (scroll to right to see full data in the table)
As mentioned in the earlier section about puppy and adult food, wet food is considerably more expensive if you decide to use only wet food. If you decide to combine dry and wet food, and you will have to find the optimal balance of feeding variety and budget. Majority of wet food manufacturers recommend 4.5 13.7 oz (390 g) cans per day, which is slightly less than for adults. This, still, results in whopping 1,643 cans of food per year for your Old English Sheepdog senior.

Cost of treats for an Old English Sheepdog
It is interesting to write this section, mainly because we all know that whatever plan you make and whatever budget you set aside, you will not be strong enough to follow it. We all adore creative ways our pups entertain us and how they use their charm power to get more treats. It seems that coming from your hand, food is sweet and yummy.
There is only one golden rule with treats. Don’t add treats to calories you provide your puppy through regular meals. Treats are often rich in calories, so you should count the calories of your treats and subtract from the daily plan. For example, if each treat is 20 calories and your OES daily intake is 1500 calories, then you should give 1300 calories through regular meals if you plan to give 10 small biscuits as a treat. As mentioned above, keeping discipline is much harder than you would initially think.
To calculate cost of treats, we will have to be somewhat creative. Of course, the real-world consumption will depend on your preferences and hardly every day will be the same. However, according to veterinary professionals, a lot of dogs are obese because their owners feed them with too many calories, so they recommend that treats should make up no more than 10% of your Old English Sheepdog’s daily calories.
To figure out how many treats your OES can have, you can use a little bit of calculation below, or take 10% of the daily recommended food intake on the label of your dog food manufacturer. We utilize the following formula to find out your Old English Sheepdog’s Resting Energy Requirement (RER). This number represents calories consumption if your sheepie was only sleeping the whole 24 hours, so we can consider it as a baseline to calculate actual calories required throughout the day depending on the status of your OES.
(Body weight in kg x 30) + 70 = Resting Energy Requirement
(Body weight in lbs. x 13.6) + 70 = Resting Energy Requirement
In line with this, average adult Old English Sheepdog with weight of 88 lbs. or 40 kg will require 1,270 calories each day just for sleeping. In the case of 4 months old OES puppy, average weight will be approximately 30 lbs. or 14 kg, so the basic metabolic requirement is 490 calories per day. Similarly, 10 months old Bobtail puppy would weigh approximately 55 lbs. or 25 kg, where the basic metabolic requirement is 820 calories per day.
Considering the above information and chart developed by the Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center, the following is the approximate RERs and number of calories that could be provided to your Old English Sheepdog as treats throughout the various stages of their development:
Table 9: Daily calories allowance for Old English Sheepdogs
* This value can vary according to the activity level and can sometimes reach factor of 5.0 for working dogs. Consult with your veterinarian to determine appropriate level
** This value varies depending on your OES condition, so consult your veterinarian to determine actual factor and daily calories intake
If you take any package of a product you wish to give to your pup as a treat, you will find nutritional information, including how many calories each treat contains. If your OES belongs to Regular Adult development stage, you can calculate how many treats you can give to your OES based on the daily allowance of 229 calories. So, if each treat is 30 calories, you can give 7 or 8 treats that day. Now, as stated earlier, sometimes it will be hard to resist to go overboard, but as soon as you notice that your sheepie gained weight, you will need to cut down and keep them healthy and lean.
Because the range of prices (Chewy, Petco, Petsmart, Petsathome, Petbarn, Zooplus, Petsworld, etc.) for dog treats is very high (USD 0.88 to USD 28.99 per day), it could take as little as USD 321, or up to a whopping USD 10,581 to provide your sheepie with dog treats. Therefore, the best approach is to set aside a fixed budget for treats. Considering that treats should not make up more than 10% of your sheepie’s daily calories intake, we can use our knowledge of dog food cost and simply take 10% off that will be assigned to dog treats budget. In that way, you still spend the same funds for food, but only allocate 10% of the food budget to treats.
Table 10: Annual treats budget proposal for your Old English Sheepdog – dry food feeding (scroll to right to see full data in the table)
Table 11: Annual treats budget proposal for your Old English Sheepdog – wet food feeding (scroll to right to see full data in the table)
In the tables above, we have presented approximate budgets for dog treats for all development stages of your Old English Sheepdog. If you plan to feed your OES with dry food, you can follow the first table, and if you wish to dominantly feed your OES with wet food, then the second table is more relevant. In any case, the figures presented in the tables are not adding to the feeding budget, as treats are not additional, but rather a complementary item for your feeding budget.

Table 12: Cost of supplies for an Old English Sheepdog in the USA, Canada, UK, Europe, Australia and India (scroll to right to see full data in the table)
To use data from the tables presented above, we must determine how much of these products would we use in a lifetime of our Old English Sheepdog. Toys: more! Yes, more! That would be our answer on how many toys. It is hard to be sensible with our puppies when they are adorable when playing. Another difficulty is that each puppy is different and will play with some toys, while completely ignore other toys. Therefore, if you don’t have any toys at home from older brother or sister, then you will have to experiment. We recommend that you take it step by step and experiment with toys from the lower price spectra. For the sake of our research, we will assume that you will get 5 toys for your puppy and then 4 toys each year for the adult OES. Please keep in mind that sheepie’s are large breed sheepdogs that like to herd and sometimes they will destroy their toys very quickly. But also, sometimes they’ll be happiest with your old shoe. You never know and you’ll see with your pup.
We assume you’ll need two collars for puppy and 4 collars for the adult OES throughout their life. We also assume that you’ll have one leash for puppy and that 2 leashes for adult OES will be enough for their lifetime. In regards of harness, our assumption is that you’ll choose collar or harness, so we can state that one harness for puppy and then three harnesses for adult OES will be enough. For the sake of our calculations, we will include collars and exclude harnesses. If you live in an area where muzzle is mandatory, then you’ll probably purchase at least 2 during the life of your sheepie. Two ID tags for collars is assumed as well. We assume that three food and water bowl sets are enough throughout the life of your OES. Two food storage bins should be adequate for the expected life span of your pooch. Yearly poop bags quantity is presented in the table. We assume that you would probably change 4 poop bag holders within the life span of your sheepie. Even though you could probably utilize the use of only one bed, we assume you’ll need two beds for your OES.
Depending on your situation, you might use dog crate, dog pen, or dog gates, or you’ll not use any of them. As this is optional, we will assume that you’ll need one dog crate for your OES and in that way budget it in with a possibility that you could save some funds by not using a crate, gates or play pen. We assume you’ll use 4 first aid kits throughout the life of your sheepie. We believe that you would need stain and odor removal sprays until your puppy is 6 months old, after which most puppies are house trained already. Therefore, we account for 3 sprays. Similarly, house training pad are for house training period, so 120 pieces are accounted for. You can choose to use pads later, but this is not budgeted in our overview. Not more than one potty train bell would be required. Hair and lint removal rollers are going to be welcome in the OES household and we believe one set would be enough monthly. One dog smart home monitor and one activity tracker are accounted for.

Old English Sheepdogs are very prone to ear dirt and issues, so you will likely experience need to clean their ears with solutions or wipes. It is hard to predict how often you will need these products, as each OES is individual, but we will assume twice per year. According to Pet-MD, veterinarian tooth cleaning should be done once per year as a minimum. The cost presented in the table above includes only tooth cleaning with no extractions or root canal cleaning. Old English Sheepdogs will require a significant amount of grooming. You can choose to do it on your own or to hire a professional groomer. Most owners will combine the two, but if you decide to leave the grooming to professional groomers, you will have to take them to groomers at least once in two months. Most probably you will still have to brush them every week (some recommendations are even twice or three times per week), but this all depends on your expectations. For the sake of our cost overview, we will assume you would take your sheepie once every two months for grooming session. If you, however, decide to do grooming on your own, you will have to purchase some equipment and supplies. Training and walking costs for an Old English Sheepdog
Training and walking costs are optional and depend on your particular situation. Old English Sheepdogs are trainable and have gentle souls. However, if you feel more comfortable to leave training to professional trainers, this option can bring you peace of mind.
When thinking of training options for your sheepie, there are in general three options to consider: individual training session with you present, group training session with you present, and dog bootcamp (also known as board and train, or kennel and train) programs. Group training sessions are usually 1-hour sessions, and they are least expensive option for you. Individual training option is when a dog obedience trainer works with you and your pooch individually. This option is also comprised of 1-hour sessions. Finally, you have an option of leaving your pup in the dog bootcamps where they will get their training and then return to you trained and ready for mutual life. Dog bootcamps are not for all dogs and you have to be careful when making this decision. We recommend you read this article to get a better picture on which personalities would benefit going to a dog bootcamp program. Please note that dog training segment is unregulated, so you have to do good research of service provider before committing. Individual and group training sessions are usually done twice per week for 6 weeks, while bootcamp is done for one or two weeks. We will assume two weeks of bootcamp for our cost calculation, and we assume your pup is over 6 months old to ensure readiness for full-fledged obedience training,
If your life is busy and you can’t do regular walkies on your own, you will probably need assistance from a professional dog walker to take your sheepie for a walk. Group walkies are cheaper than individual walks. Keep in mind that weekend walkies are usually more expensive than weekday ones. We present an average cost that includes both options, so your actual cost will depend on your preference and can be lower or higher than presented.

Two weeks of dog boarding (bootcamp) training could easily cost you on average INR 54,000 for two weeks boarding program.
Total cost of owning an Old English Sheepdog
We are now finally able to determine the total cost of owning an Old English Sheepdog. This article contains a lot of information, but we hope we managed to aid owners and potential owners who needed information on how much owning a sheepie costs. Sheepies are family members, and we adore them, so many owners would not change their minds purely on cost information, but if there is a way to be financially responsible and to avoid unnecessary costs (especially health related costs), then knowledge about costs can aid decision making. Even though we covered a lot of costs in our overview, there are some additional costs that could show up, such are microchipping fee, licensing fees, etc.
We present total costs in four categories: one where you feed your pooch with dry food, and decide to do your own grooming, walking and training; second where you feed your pooch with wet food, doing your own grooming, walking and training; third where you feed your sheepie with dry food, but you decide that grooming is to be done by a groomer, individual training lessons (group training and boarding is excluded) are done, and where you require dog walking service once a day, 5 days a week for the full lifespan of your Old English Sheepdog; the fourth category is the same as the third, but you feed your sheepie with wet food.We do not include optional health treatment costs, but we do include cost of getting a pet insurance. It is assumed that you are buying an OES puppy; not adopting. There are separate tables for countries and regions we researched.
